South Australian Opal Mines: The main fields in South Australia are Coober Pedy, Andamooka, Mintabie, and Lambina. Together these fields produce 80% of all Australian opal.
New South Wales Opal Mines: The main fields in New South Wales are Lightning Ridge and White Cliffs in the North West of the state. These fields produce 95% of the world's black opal.
Queensland Opal Mines: The main fields in Queensland are Quilpie and Yowah, Jundah and Opalton. These fields produce 95% of beautiful boulder opal.
Types of Australia Opal
There are many different types of opal. Both sedimentry and volcanic opal exist, sedimentry opal is far more stable and less prone to crazing and cracking.
Australia's large ancient ocean desert contains not only the world's most stable opal, but opal of great value, 'play of colour', and stable opal with a low water content.
